In the last 48 hours, Punjab has been struck by one of the harshest flood emergencies in recent history. Heavy monsoon rains, combined with India’s sudden release of dam water, have drowned towns and villages across Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Streets in Lahore overflowed, Sialkot and Narowal faced destruction, Shakargarh submerged under muddy waves, while the beautiful Swat Valley was torn apart by flash floods.

This year’s floods are the result of climate change pressure and cross-border water release. Pakistan is already one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world. Rising temperatures, melting glaciers, and erratic rainfall patterns have intensified monsoon impacts. When India released water from dams at peak rainfall, the situation escalated into a humanitarian crisis.
